Procession in Rome against the government: clashes

Clashes between demonstrators and police at the national procession against the government and for an Italy out of war promoted by the 1 June Committee which is marching in Rome.

A section of the procession deviated from the expected route and, upon reaching Via Vicenza, came into contact with the police deployed in riot gear. A lightening charge pushed back the demonstrators, who threw firecrackers and paper bombs. The police responded with tear gas.

The procession started from Piazza Vittorio with the banner ‘Against the Meloni government, no more exploitation, fascism and wars’ and a large Palestinian flag in front and will end at Porta Pia after a stop in Piazzale Aldo Moro where the Sapienza university collectives and the students Medes joined the procession.

“Genocide and war start from the university, stop agreements, you will not stop our anger”. This is what is written on the banner at the head of the “segment” of the collectives. The boys had invited the other students to join their block to continue the demonstration together.

Thousands of participants, at least 5 thousand according to investigative sources, more than 10 thousand people according to the organizers. Furthermore, there are over 50 acronyms that have joined the mobilization between trade unions, such as USB, social, political, student, Palestinian communities, young people from university campuses throughout Italy and migrants. Among the banners displayed in the square, patrolled by the police, where Palestinian flags, red flags of the communist party and ‘Power to the People’ are flying, we read ‘Lower weapons and raise wages’.

The protest, as the 1 June Committee explained in recent days, is aimed at the “Government of war and the attack on wages, of complicity with the genocide underway in Gaza and of the restriction of democratic spaces, of the ‘fascists within ‘ who reside in the highest offices of the State and of the policies of attack on women, on migrants, on the welfare state”. The procession that will march up to Porta Pia will make a stop in Piazzale Aldo Moro where the students of the Sapienza collectives are gathered.
