Unique service in Umbria: obstetric anesthetist present 24 hours a day at the Terni hospital

TERNI – 10 years since the establishment of a team of obstetric anesthetists present all day, 365 days a year, in the delivery room, with the aim of guaranteeing the mother a safe and pain-free birth. To celebrate the anniversary, a national conference entitled “Giving birth without pain and safely in the Terni hospital was organized at the Hotel Garden in Terni. Our first 10 years”. Nationally renowned speakers and doctors were present to discuss the topic and raise awareness of the fundamental role played by the team of professionals at the moment of childbirth, such as the anesthetist, the gynecologist, the obstetrician, the neonatologist and the interventional radiologist, whose mission is unique: control pain and protect the mother and newborn. Giuseppe De Masi, Medical Director of SC Anesthesia and Resuscitation of the Santa Maria Terni Hospital: «We are enthusiastically celebrating the tenth year of our activity, we can be satisfied with the results achieved, every year we carry out 48/50% of birth analgesia on spontaneous births ».

The first session, entitled “Delivery room and anesthetist, an increasingly current combination” was opened by professor Elena Giovanna Bignami, by dr. Leonardo Borrello, by Dr. Silvia Ferialla and by Dr. Fabio Gori, in which the role of the obstetric anesthetist in the birth process was analyzed: from analgesia in labor to maternal-fetal criticality, under the expert guidance of Dr. Maria Grazia Frigo. Followed by Prof. Franco Marinangeli explored the question of “Is law 38 extendable to acute pain?”. Advanced anesthetic diagnostics in the maternal and child department: from ultrasound to hemodynamic monitoring was the topic analyzed by Dr. Giuseppe De Masi. We continued with the topic of changes in obstetric care during labor in analgesia with Dr. Antonella Martoni. The organized models of Rimini, Terni and Parma were compared at the level of anesthesia service in obstetrics by doctors Dr. Fulvio Fracassi, dr. Annalisa Bizzarri and dr. Christian Angel Compagnone.

The second part of the day saw the management of critical issues in obstetrics and the contribution of obstetric anesthesia under the spotlight. The debate was opened by prof. Mario Bosco, Dr. Marta Casali and Prof. Antonio Corcione. Following this, preeclampsia was analysed: a paradigm of teamwork by the delivery room team, with Dr. Giannemilio Furicchia. The mother with heart disease: how to give birth and where to give birth was the topic addressed by Dr. Fabrizia Calabrese. Dr. Fabio Caramelli analyzed postpartum hemorrhage and dynamic coagulation monitoring: a challenge to the organizational system of a modern delivery room. Doctors Massimiliano Allegritti, Dr. Andrea Colasanti and Dr. Manila Ferretti discussed the topic of placenta previa. The topic of difficult airways and pregnancy closed the day, with Dr. Ida Di Giacinto.
