“The Voice of Courage” is the title of the winning video, ranking first in the B of the “Capital” complex of the “San Domenico Savio” Educational Directorate of Terzigno.

Award delivered to the School in the Senate Hall in Rome directly by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella.

The Municipality of Terzigno wanted to organize an event for the prestigious result achieved in the Board Room of the Institution, Friday 31 May, in the presence of the Mayor, Francesco Ranieri; of the Deputy Mayor with responsibility for Culture, Genny Falciano, of the School Director, Rosaria Murano and of the Commander of the Terzigno Carabinieri Station, Gennaro Auricchio.

“Traces of memory” is a competition organized by the “Network of Archives so as not to forget”, of the Ministry of Merit Education, of the Ministry of Culture. The awarding of the winning schools takes place every year in the presence of the highest state officials on May 9th, as part of the celebrations organized for the day of remembrance established in 2007 in memory of the victims of terrorism and the massacres of this kind.

The aim of the competition is to raise awareness of the events of recent Italian history by searching for traces in one’s own territory to strengthen the memory of those who worked for the common good, even at the cost of their lives.

In November 1980, Mimmo Beneventano, municipal councilor of Ottaviano, paid with his life for his commitment against crime and was killed by organized crime.

During the event at the Municipality it was underlined how important it is to know and remember what happened after the death of Mimmo Beneventano, known and respected for his work as a surgeon even outside the borders of Ottaviano. At the beginning there was silence and dismay, locked in the minds of his fellow citizens, perhaps accustomed to those deaths that did not stop and increased more and more. Then the protest arose in Ottaviano with around ten thousand young people marching on 17 December 1982 against the Camorra. That protest became the spark of an entire generation that rejected the Camorra. In that era without social media, rumors spread quickly and the student protests spread from the suburbs to the metropolis and then to the entire South. It was therefore not just the police who fought against illegality. There was school. The more illegality spread, the more the school stood as a bulwark of legality, thanks to enlightened teachers who did not limit themselves to carrying forward a sterile program, disconnected from reality, but formed civic consciences so strong that they did not fear what they only feared to pronounce.

Hence the idea of the teachers who coordinated the winning work, Maria Gabriella De Felice, Marilisa Giordano, Alessia Caldarelli and Maria Neve Giugliano, to collect, without warning, during the normal course of teaching activities, the students’ impressions, their considerations which were then assembled into a video.

With a well-defined common thread from the Terzigno School to the Medici Castle of Ottaviano, where the scenes of the video deserving of the first prize were shot, it made it possible to realize a work also appreciated by the Ottaviano Administration which participated in the event awards ceremony in the Council Room in Terzigno, with the Mayor, Biagio Simonetti; the Deputy Mayor, Antonio Napolitano; the Councilor for Public Education, Virginia Nappo and the Headmaster of the “Mimmo Beneventano” Comprehensive Institute, Anna Fornaro, with a parchment delivered by the Deputy Mayor Falciano of Terzigno and the Councilor Nappo of Ottaviano to the Terzignese School.
