Spanish delegation received at Palazzo San Giorgio to strengthen the relationship between Reggio Calabria and Spain

The municipal administration of Reggio Calabria received a Spanish delegation this afternoon as part of the International Reggio-Spain Friendship Days. Leading the Spanish delegation is Alberto Cascón Martín, as well as author of the book “Los que svenn”, and the representative of the Spanish delegation for Italy, Professor Maria José Leal Cariñena. Doing the honors were the Mayor of Reggio Calabria, Giuseppe Falcomatà, together with the president of the “Calabria-Spain” association, Rosa Fontana. The latter underlined that it had been requested by the Administration to organize a «cycle of initiatives to strengthen the relationship of friendship between Reggio Calabria and Spain in consideration of the renewed relationship determined by the airlines opened with Spain and which are traveling at full capacity rhythm. We – Fontana underlined – are Magna Graecia, but also a little Spanish. So we accepted the invitation of the municipal administration.”

The mayor, after thanking the “Calabria Spagna” association for what was organised, explained the choice to welcome the delegation in the mayors’ hall, «dedicated to all the first citizens, to those who have personally contributed to this city , making a contribution to social, cultural and economic growth for the territory. Reggio’s history – added Falcomatà – is a three-thousand-year history and is the result of a contamination of cultures, knowledge and even flavours, over the millennia that our city has gone through. The Greek part is known very well, the others a little less, especially when it comes to “Spanish domination”, although what we are experiencing is in fact a cultural contamination.” For the mayor, «this is a moment of revival with the new routes to Spain, also because from the first data the flight to and from Barcelona is the most covered, with a percentage of 94% of seats. It is something positive that makes us understand how natural the connection between these lands is. It will be up to us to strengthen it and encourage it in all possible ways.”

Alberto Cascón Martín gave Mayor Falcomatà a copy of his volume “Los quevienen”, which will be presented tomorrow morning in the Chandelier Hall of Palazzo San Giorgio. A volume that tells a corner of life in the Ionian part of Calabria, a novel through which the comparison between two positions, the rural and the urban, emerges.

The mayor instead donated the volume “Reggio Calabria. Roots and history. Architecture, archeology and territory” which describes the dozens of archaeological areas scattered from the center to the outskirts of Reggio Calabria.

The evening continued with a concert organized by the singing classes of the “Francesco Cilea” Conservatory of Reggio Calabria inside the “Battaglia” council hall of Palazzo San Giorgio.
