Ragusa has a new garden. Inaugurated in the former Freight Yard which is still being completely redeveloped

A new green lung in the heart of the city. The new garden of the former freight yard was inaugurated this morning, a completely transformed area which marks a significant step forward in the urban regeneration project promoted by the municipal administration. This event represents an important stage in the broader development program of the surface metro, aimed at improving the mobility and liveability of the city.

The former freight yard, once characterized by concrete, crushed stone and iron, has undergone a radical metamorphosis. Now, in place of what was a barren and inhospitable area, there is a lush garden that extends into the heart of the city, becoming a new point of reference for citizens and visitors.

Mayor Peppe Cassì underlined the historical importance of the place, highlighting how a track and the ancient railway building have been preserved as evidence of the past. The latter will become a commercial space available for private activities through an already published tender. “Concrete, crushed stone and iron have given way to greenery,” said Cassì. “A new green lung that unites neighborhoods that have previously been separated and does so with carob trees, olive trees, holm oaks, washingtonias, jacarandas, privet, laergestroemia, as per the project financed by the Ministry of Ecological Transition as part of the ‘Experimental program of interventions for adaptation to climate change in urban areas’.”

The garden, which will be maintained by Despar Sicilia, includes fitness equipment donated by another private company and will be entirely under video surveillance. “Come here to get the sun during the day (while waiting for the trees to grow a little more) or the cool air in the evening, come here for a walk or to train. The garden is open every day, from 9.00 to 21.00,” invited the mayor.

The councilor for public works, Gianni Giuffrida, emphasized how this new urban park represents the first piece of an ambitious urban regeneration project. “A new urban park in the historic center, the first important piece of the urban regeneration project which, in line with the visions of environmental sustainability, will relaunch our upper historic center, enriching it with functions, services and socialization areas,” stated Giuffrida .

The inauguration of the Garden of the former Freight Yard was welcomed with enthusiasm by the citizens, who can now enjoy a new green space for relaxation, physical activity and socialising. This project not only improves urban aesthetics, but also contributes to environmental sustainability and quality of life in Ragusa, marking a significant step towards a greener and more livable future for the city.
