Penitentiary Police foil prisoner escape

Cremona prison: inmate pretends to be a worker and attempts to escape. Blocked by the Penitentiary Police

Firm stance taken by the Autonomous Penitentiary Police Union (Sappe) after an inmate’s attempt to escape from the green area of the Ca’ del Ferro prison.

Alfonso Greco, Sappe’s secretary for Lombardy, reconstructed the episode:
«A prisoner, upon exiting the green area, instead of returning to the section, headed towards the intercinct where the only prison police sentry present had no view and, taking advantage of some drainage work near the carriage gate , attempted to pass himself off as an insider. The colleague became suspicious and the inmate started running.”

Greco explained that the man «climbed over the block house and started running.
The alarm was immediately raised and shortly afterwards the prisoner chased by the prison police was taken back near the city hospital and transferred to an institution.”
The trade unionist expressed Sappe’s “public applause to the prison police staff who avoided the commission of a serious episode with extreme professionalism.
By now, even escape attempts by prisoners, whether they occur from hospitals, courts or prisons, are becoming a mere statistic.”

And he highlighted that «the episode was best managed by the Penitentiary Police, who pay heavily, in terms of stress and operations, for these serious and continuous critical episodes.
Attacks, scuffles, injuries to staff, as well as brawls and attempted suicides, are unfortunately commonplace.
It is important and urgent for us to provide a new custodial model.”

The general secretary of Sappe, Donato Capece, highlighted:
«We are talking about policemen who serve in sections at the limit, and beyond, the minimum conditions of healthiness, who are forced to work hours and hours of overtime every day to cope with institutional tasks, who do not even have the useful tools to guarantee their own physical safety, such as the taser”.
Capece has once again called for “urgent measures”.

Starting with «a tightening of sentences for prisoners who attack penitentiary police personnel during their stay and serving their sentences in prison» and the «expulsions of all foreign prisoners in Italy, often protagonists of the most serious episodes in prison ».
“We need a strong and clear presence of the State, which cannot tolerate this widespread impunity, and urgent and effective measures are needed”, continued the secretary of the first union of the Blue Basques, who appealed to the leaders of the Department of Administration penitentiary (Dap) to create the conditions “to re-establish order and security, truly implementing that zero tolerance towards those violent inmates who, even in prison, are convinced that they can continue to commit crimes with absolute impunity”.

«Strong rules are needed to re-establish order and security in prisons, truly implementing that zero tolerance towards violent inmates who, even in prison, are convinced that they can continue to commit crimes with absolute impunity.
Here we need the strong and evident presence of the State, which cannot tolerate this widespread impunity, and urgent and effective measures are needed”, concluded Capece.
