The opposition in Abruzzo, between the defeat on the Quaglieri case and the path to cohesion

How is the opposition in Abruzzo? The President of the Region Marcus Marsilio has just had an easy ride in riding the note of the National Anti-Corruption Authority on the incompatibilities, excluded, of the councilor Mario Quaglieri.

It had in fact been a united battle of the Pact for Abruzzo: the complaint had been created by the Democratic Party and then embraced by the other council groups.
A defeat, however in a framework which, although fragile and fluid, shows some interesting innovations. Luciano D’Amico, candidate for the Presidency of the Region defeated in March, continues to exercise the recognized role of reference and leader of the opposition in Abruzzo, to speak as spokesperson for all political and civic forces, both in institutional passages, such as the inaugural session of the Regional Council , and in media outlets. And if Giulianova was unable to unite the forces of the center-left around a single candidate for mayor for the municipal elections, in the most politically significant match, the vote in Pescara, the closeness to Carlo Costantini it was immediately evident. D’Amico spoke at the opening of the electoral campaign, and not only that. It’s not a little. The so-called supply chain, from the Municipalities gradually to the highest institutional levels, is one of the reasons for the consolidation of the right’s dominance in Abruzzo; its progressive dissolution, in recent years, amidst misunderstandings, jealousies and underestimations in L’Aquila, Pescara and the Region, has cost the centre-left very dearly. This is why we should try to start again from the most populous city in Abruzzo, which is also in the process of merging with Montesilvano and Spoltore, cultivating unity of purpose and cohesion at multiple levels, is at least a smart move. It should not be forgotten that in the regional vote, in the Adriatic city, the Pact for Abruzzo prevailed over the centre-right in terms of votes.
Of course the journey is long and difficult. It will be necessary to avoid pitfalls and bad national influences, those that were able to distance themselves when the coalition was built and the choice of D’Amico as candidate. The political phase is then particularly adverse, given that it opens coinciding with the beginning of a second consecutive term in government for Marsilio, a goal never achieved by his predecessors. Time will tell.

Today there is the session of the Regional Council dedicated to healthcare, another useful opportunity to scrutinize the movements of the minorities. Meanwhile, directly from D’Amico, the initiative of establishing a “Anti-fascist observatory on the violation of constitutional rights in Abruzzo”, on the basis of the usual controversies surrounding the celebration of April 25th, this time starting from Martinsicuro. An idea worth mentioning at least, because it can also be read as the attempt to aggregate the opposition’s work around politics, in this case the dynamic and extensive reading of the Liberation as a moment of defense of (plural) freedoms, including those with economic needs, health, affective. Therefore not limiting the commitment of minorities to procedural issues but rather seeking meeting grounds of a cultural and value-based nature. The fact that the aforementioned observatory is directly headed by D’Amico traces this attempt at amalgamation back to his leadership.
