Belcanto festival: two great events on Saturday and Sunday in Modena – Che Cultura

For years Lapressa.it has offered free and independent information to its readers without any type of public contribution. Private advertising covers part of the costs, but it is not sufficient. For this reason we ask those who read us and follow us every day to give us, if they wish, a contribution based on their possibilities. Even a small support, multiplied by the tens of thousands of people from Modena and Emilia-Romagna who read us every day, is fundamental.

A weekend full of Modena Belcanto Festival events is upon us, with two chamber events as part of the ‘mini-review’ Chamber Voices. Bel canto in art venues featuring the best students of the Modena Belcanto Masterclass; and an event created in collaboration with Musica Contemporanea Festival: Slate Petals for voice and live electronics with music by Zeno Baldi. The events will take place in evocative places in the city of Modena, spaces rich in history and art that make Modena Belcanto a truly widespread Festival and a good opportunity to meet Modena and its many excellences.

As part of the ‘mini-review’ Voci da camera. Bel canto in places of art, on Saturday 25 May 2024 at 6.00 pm, the former AGO Chapel will host a concert dedicated to arias and pages from the chamber repertoire of the greatest authors: Giuseppe Verdi, Giacomo Puccini and Francesco Paolo Tosti.

The performers will be some of the best students of the Modena Belcanto Masterclass, the soprano Anna Capiluppi and the tenor Liu Janwei, who will be accompanied on the piano by Francesca Pivetta. The location hosting the concert is truly a place of great charm: AGO is in fact a cultural and architectural redevelopment project of the former Sant’Agostino Hospital which is part of a broader regeneration process of the entire urban quadrant including the Sant’Agostino Complex, Largo Porta Sant’Agostino, the Palazzo dei Musei and the former Estense Hospital. Free entry while available places last.

The Musica alla Delfini concert on Sunday 26 May 2024 at 6pm, again as part of Voci da camera. The bel canto in the places of art will take place in the courtyard of Palazzo Santa Margherita: the arias taken from the most beloved repertoire of Giuseppe Verdi, Gaetano Donizetti and Vincenzo Bellini will be interpreted by the mezzo-soprano Dominika Isabell Markova, by the tenor Ha Chanyoung and by the bass- baritone Chen Maike, students selected from the Modena Belcanto Masterclass, who will be accompanied on the piano by Paolo Andreoli.

The setting for the concert is splendid: located in one of the most important streets of the historic center of Modena, Palazzo Santa Margherita – whose name derives from the church that once stood in this area – hosts, in addition to the Modena Arti Visive Foundation, the Library Delfini and the Vecchi-Tonelli Conservatory of Music. Free entry while available places last. In case of rain the concert will take place in the Ridotto of the Pavarotti-Freni Municipal Theatre.

Also on Sunday 26 May, at 8.30 pm, at the Teatro della Fondazione Collegio San Carlo – you can listen to the electronic manipulation of the voice of soprano Ljuba Bergamelli in Zeno Baldi’s latest production, Slate Petals, on texts by Anthony Etherin: a project that falls into The year of two important anniversaries, the forty years since the death of Cathy Berberian and the twenty years since the death of Luciano Berio, two fundamental figures in the history of new vocality. It will be an interaction between humans and electronics, which will investigate the lights and shadows of the voice and the personal traces that it brings to the surface. Tickets (full price 10 euros, concessions for under27s and over65s 7 euros) are on sale at the ticket office of the Teatro Comunale Pavarotti-Freni, at the event location starting one hour before the start of the concert or online on the Modena Belcanto page .
