“There is a fundamental difference between Inter-Oaktree and Milan-Elliott”

Speaking during the podcast of Gazzetta dello Sport ‘Scalpel’, the journalist of Rosea Marco Iaria underlined an important difference between Inter and Milan in the context of the changes of ownership that have seen the two clubs involved in recent times, with the Nerazzurri club having recently moved from Suning to Oaktree: “The procedure is that of enforcement of the pledge, as Elliott did in his time with Yonghong Li for Milan. Inter’s path will follow that of Milan in 2018, with the acquisition by an investment fund and the related logic. But Inter’s situation is very different from that of Milan from six years ago. There has been a restructuring of the accounts by the Nerazzurri club which has already led to a reduction in losses to around 50 million deficit in June 2024.”

Iaria then explains what the point of divergence is between the two experiences: “Oaktree will have to deal with consolidation, not recovery. There is even talk of a return to an increase in salaries, so the accounts have improved a lot and the fund will not have to inject capital as Elliott did before selling to RedBird. Then he will have to intervene only for issues necessary for the functioning of the club, with a view to resale at a higher price. Elliott had to invest hundreds of millions to get a return on his investment in Milan, Oaktree will have a much easier time obtaining a notable margin from the sale of Inter. The Nerazzurri club is worth at least one billion euros, the latent capital gain is very considerable.”
