«The campaigns of screening from the maculopathy have the objective of promptly identifying patients affected by forms at high risk of impairment of visual function, in such a way as to be able to quickly direct them to an effective treatment in preventing the most severe sequelae of the pathology – highlights the prof. Mariotti, Ordinary of illnesses of the visual apparatus of the Univpm, as well as an internationally renowned surgeon – Initiatives such as the one on Saturday confirm the constant commitment of our company not only in guaranteeing high levels welfarebut also in organizing and supporting wide-ranging campaigns for the protection of public health.”

The event, promoted by Roche Italy, sees the patronage – among others – also ofThe Univpm. Its rector, prof. Gregori applauds the organization and results achieved by the Mariotti Clinic. There are 25 thousand diagnostic services and more 4 thousand the interventions surgical of 2023. «Resultsthese, which – according to Gregori – are obtained thanks to the constant commitment of the medical and nursing staff. Patients’ vision improves thanks to innovative therapies and the use of personalized approaches”.

The campaign, entitled ˊYour point of view matters – don’t let maculopathy stop youˊ, is aimed at preventing maculopathy and raising awareness about «degeneration macular age-related moistness and edema macular diabetic». All so that patients can continue to have an active social and working life, also because – let’s face it – age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is «one of the main causes of loss of view in industrialized countries, and its prevalence increases with advancing age – say experts – It is estimated that approximately 10% of people aged between 65 and 74 and over 30% of those over 75 are affected from advanced AMD”.

But that’s not all, because, according to what the data say, over 30% of people with type 2 diabetes and around 10% of those with diabetes type 1 will develop diabetic retinopathy during the course of their illness.

Symptoms related to maculopathies can manifest after a long time, sometimes when the pathology is now at an advanced stage. For this reason the watchword must be prevention. «The strong shortage of disclosure and of diffusion of information on maculopathies and on therapeutic paths generate a lack of awareness and a consequent delay in diagnosis and treatment prospects, thus compromising the possibilities of intervention timely and increasing the risk of worsening the patients’ conditions”, says the Macula Committee through the president, Massimo Ligustro, one of the supporters of the campaign.
