With 5.5 million euros, Prato is the seventh Tuscan capital municipality that in 2023 collected the greatest proceeds from fines and sanctions against private individuals for violations of the Highway Code. This was established by the analysis carried out by Facile.it on Siope data, the information system for the operations of public bodies. Last year, in the regional ranking, Prato placed after Florence (71.8 million euros, third largest municipality in Italy), Livorno (8.9 million), Siena (7 million), Grosseto (6.7 million), Pistoia (6.1 million), Pisa (5.9 million) and ahead of Arezzo (4.2 million), Lucca (3.8 million), Massa (2.3 million) and Carrara (1.5 million).

Analyzing the per capita value, calculated as the ratio between the proceeds and the number of resident inhabitants, Prato is positioned in the penultimate place in the ranking with 28 euros, ahead only of Carrara (26 euros). In front of everyone we find Florence again (198 euros), followed by Siena (134 euros), Grosseto (83 euros), Pistoia (69 euros), Pisa (66 euros), Livorno (58 euros), Arezzo (44 euros), Lucca (43 euros) and Massa (35 euros).

“These data highlight a fact: the municipality of Prato is not as oppressive towards its citizens as some mistakenly claim, but on the contrary, it is decidedly more virtuous than many others – the comment of Flora Leoni, municipal councilor for safety and security Municipal police – Those who accuse us of making money do not know that the money for penalties linked to failure to respect speed limits is 100% reinvested by law in the field of road safety, therefore maintenance, technology, infrastructure for traffic remodulation. The proceeds from other types of sanctions must instead be reinvested at least 50% for road safety, but we have also exceeded this threshold”.
