Special steels Terni, the first certified Italian steel producer

Terni special steels – Acciai Speciali Terni (AST), the main Italian steel producer, is the first to obtain ResponsibleSteel certification, the most prestigious global sustainability certification program for the steel sector. The announcement comes directly from the company, which explained how the Terni plant, including its service center and forging division, have successfully obtained the “core site certification” from the independent auditors of DNV Italia to operate according to the ResponsibleSteel standard .

Gianluca Gigli, Chief Technical Officer and Managing Director of AST, stated that this result represents a strengthening of the company’s path towards responsible steel production, integrating sustainability into all company processes, in full compliance with ESG (Environmental , Social, Governance). This achievement, of which the company is proud, will accompany AST’s environmental, economic and social transition, with the aim of ensuring long-term value for the benefit of all stakeholders and the territory.

The ResponsibleSteel standard is based on 12 principles with more than 200 requirements, and the checks carried out by DNV examined various aspects related to sustainability, such as governance and ethics, health and safety, human and labor rights, climate change, carbon emissions, greenhouse gases and biodiversity, responsible management of resources and other environmental impacts, as well as stakeholder involvement and relations with the local community.

Annie Heaton, CEO of ResponsibleSteel, commented that this first ResponsibleSteel site certification in Italy represents an important milestone for the entire steel industry and for the Arvedi Group, of which AST is part. Heaton also highlighted how AST demonstrates a strong focus on circularity, aiming to reduce waste and increase the use of recycled scrap, as well as reusing refractories and launching a waste recovery project.

This result demonstrates Acciai Speciali Terni’s commitment to integrating sustainability into all its production processes, positioning itself as a pioneer in the Italian steel sector in promoting responsible practices with low environmental impact.
