red alert in Lombardy and Veneto

Central-Western Europe is affected by a depression structure which will trigger particularly humid south-western currents on the Mediterranean, affecting part of the central-northern Italian regions, especially those of the North-East, where widespread and locally persistent rainfall is expected. Based on the available forecasts, the Department of Civil Protection in agreement with the regions involved – which is responsible for activating the civil protection systems in the territories concerned – has issued a warning of adverse weather conditions. The warning predicts scattered to widespread and locally persistent rainfall from late afternoon today, including showers or thunderstorms, over Tuscany, Emilia-Romagna, Lombardy and Veneto, extending to Friuli Venezia Giulia and the Autonomous Provinces of Trento and Bolzano. The phenomena will be accompanied by heavy showers, frequent electrical activity, local hailstorms and strong gusts of wind. On the basis of the expected and ongoing phenomena, a red alert has been assessed for tomorrow, Tuesday 21 May, in some sectors of Lombardy and Veneto, an orange alert in some areas of Lombardy, Veneto and Emilia-Romagna and a yellow alert in most of the central-north.
