CATANZARO “It is not acceptable that public health in Calabria has been under the administration of a commissioner for 14 years and there have been no improvements either from an economic and financial point of view or in the provision of essential levels of assistance. Calabria is in last place in the Italian Lea ranking: 14 Calabrians out of 100 have decided not to seek treatment, 70 thousand Calabrians undertake journeys of hope to the North every year. It’s as if the state had raised the white flag. In five years of ad hoc decrees on Calabria, the Commissioner’s powers have increased but the direct benefits for Calabrian citizens have been nil. How is it possible that, despite the presence of the commissioner, the health authorities of Reggio Calabria and Catanzaro were dissolved due to the mafia and that the access commission has just been established in Vibo? There is a need to shine a spotlight on the Calabria case. And on the way in which this right is managing healthcare by shifting the entire axis towards the private sector.
