TURURANO (BRINDISI) – Tuturano is preparing to experience an event that is repeated over the years and which characterizes the life of this hamlet of Brindisi. On Friday 24 May, starting at 7.00 pm, on the initiative of the Pro Loco Tuturano, the 24th edition of the “Owl Tournament” will take place. The historical procession will cross the main streets and then converge in Piazza Regina Margherita where medieval shows and games will take place. Guests of the evening were the actor Davide Silvestri and the Brindisi showgirl Pamela Barretta. Presenting the evening, in the guise of courteous jester, Gianluca Foresi. The initiative enjoys the patronage of the presidency of the Puglia Region council, the Province of Brindisi, the Municipality of Brindisi, the Brindisi/Taranto Chamber of Commerce and the Asi Consortium.
“The Owl Tournament” is the Tuturano event that recalls the Middle Ages. The event aims to remember the “annus mirabilis” of the former Brindisi hamlet: it was 1097 when the Norman leader, Count Goffredo di Conversano, and his wife Sichelgaita donated the farmhouse in the land of Brindisi to the monastery of the Sacred Virgins of Saint Benedict of whom the feudal lord was protector. A journey that has now taken on the character of a traditional appointment. And in fact the history of Tuturano began with its medieval fiefdom and continues with the historic deed of donation, transcribed in the manuscript of Ortensio Leo and preserved in the De Leo archbishop’s library in Brindisi. Goffredo becomes the first «dominator» of Brindisi, a title linked to the administrative functions of the city, he resumes its reconstruction, asks Pope Urban II to consecrate the site where the Cathedral would be built, restores dignity to the port which would become the strategic docking of the crusader armies.
