The “organic Tonda di Calabria” protagonist at the “Nutri-Menti”

Hazelnut Organic Tonda di Calabriacultivated in the territories of Cardinale and Torre di Ruggiero, in the province of Catanzaro, one of the sessions of the manifestation from the cut informative and scientific “Nutri-Menti”. Held at the Crisea Research Center in Belcastro, on the occasion of the presentation
of the Qualevita Atlas which brings together in a single volume Italian DOP, IGP, TSG Italian agri-food and wine products, IG spirit drinks and flavored wines, has also highlighted some of the area’s food and wine excellences.

An event promoted in collaboration with Treccani and to which, in this third edition, the “Rita Levi Montalcini” Higher Education Institute of Sersale and the Municipality of Cardinale contributed which within the “Borgo della Nocciola” projectinvested in a study to investigate the potential nutraceutical properties of Tonda di Calabria.

With greetings from the president of Crisea, Stefano Alcaro, we got to the heart of the work. The moderation of the session dedicated to the Tonda di Calabria hazelnut was entrusted to Joshua It costsassociate professor at the Magna Graecia University of Catanzaro. Maria Grazia Roundconsultant of the Crisea center for the research conducted within the “Borgo della Nocciola” project, provided an update on the nutraceutical studies conducted by Crisea in close collaboration with national academic subjects.

The chef Nadia Christina Tappen, former ambassador of the Municipality of Cardinale for the Tonda di Calabria, oversaw the preparation of a hazelnut-based dish, explaining the various phases and focusing on the organoleptic and sensorial enhancement of the nut in the shell. The mayor of the Municipality of Cardinale also spoke at the event on behalf of the Tonda di Calabria area, Danilo Staglianòpleased that on this occasion the first data of the scientific research in which his Administration decided to invest to enhance the quality of a product, of a local resource, were illustrated.

The final results of the study conducted, he informed, will be presented in mid-June to Cardinale, hoping that the research can contribute to obtaining PGI recognition for the Calabrian Tonda. Giuseppe Rotiroti, president of the Consorzio Valorizzazione e Tutela Nocciola di Calabria and of the Association of Tonda di Calabria organic producers, in this regard, wanted to highlight the importance of the work carried out, which is a source of pride for the farmers, which gives prestige to the product and to the territory. He then expressed, on behalf of the producers, gratitude towards Crisea and the Municipality of Cardinale.
