The students of Deffenu in Olbia are mathematics champions

The mathematics champions at Deffenu in Olbia.

Logic, intuition and imagination, but also a lot of commitment, passion and spirit of competition. These are the ingredients with which the students ofAttilio Deffenu Higher Technical Institute of Olbia, guided by the teacher Sara Santandrea supported by the support teacher Valeria Ziroliaare obtaining important recognitions in mathematical competitions of various national and international categories.

Next May 25th, Antonello Mazzone of Golfo Aranci, registered with the 5th A Computer Sciencewill fly to Milan where he will represent Sardinia in the national final of the prestigious “International mathematical games championships – Pristem Center of Bocconi University”. Mazzone conquered the first place in the L2 category to the semi-finals held on March 16th at the Li Punti comprehensive institute in Sassari and, in the next step, if he manages to rank among the top three, he will enter the team that will represent Italy in the international final in August.

The students of the Olbia institute give prestige to the Olbia institute in the team competition 1st A Computer Science formed by Mattia Accalai, Mirko Antoniello, Manuel Barreras, Jacopo Bua, Manuel Campus, Gian Luca Carta, Alexander Carzedda, Federico Cassetta, Alessandro Casu, Paolo Chisu, Dibari Daniele, Farina Nicolò, Andrea Malesa, Andrea Mariano, Mette Giovanni Maria, Guglielmo Mutzu, Darius Petrescu, Filippo Pinna, Alessio Piredda, Alex Pitta, Antonio Poggi, Mattia Remolif, Massimiliano Sanna, Michele Varrucciu.

On May 22, the student group will take part in the regional final of the Transalpine Mathematical Rally for the C9 category, where they will compete for first place in a challenge between brains that will take place at the Devilla technical center in Sassari.

The class passed the first two preliminary phases brilliantly and was then admitted to the final one, after comparing the scores of all the schools of the ARMT of Cagliari and those of the Sassari section. «The Mathematical Rally is a wonderful competition – stated the teacher Santandreawho together with the manager Stefano Stacca he believed in the potential of the boys from the first moment. Among the main aims of the competition is the objective of developing a positive attitude of young people towards language and mathematical thinking.”

As the organizers claim, a mathematical game is an exciting way to introduce students to this subject apparently difficult, which often surprises with the simplicity and elegance of the solutions.

Participants have the opportunity to delve into numerous aspectsor they can rediscover them in a new light, perhaps encountering the right motivations: what is needed is the ability to reason, a pinch of imagination and that intuition that makes it clear that a apparently difficult problem it’s actually simpler than you might expect.
