Fines, Viterbo bringing up the rear of Lazio

Fines, Viterbo bringing up the rear of Lazio. Rome is the provincial capital of Lazio which, in 2023, collected the greatest proceeds from fines and sanctions against private individuals for violations of the highway code.

Viterbo brings up the rear of Lazio

The data emerges from the analysis carried out by Facile.it on Siope data, the information system for the operations of public bodies, which also highlighted how the municipality has collected more than 138.7 million euros. In total, in 2023, the Lazio capital municipalities collected almost 148.5 million euros.

Rome in first place

If, as mentioned, Rome occupies first place in the regional ranking (and second in the national ranking), in second and third place on the podium are Rieti (7.5 million) and Latina (1.3 million). The municipalities of Frosinone (612 thousand) and Viterbo close the regional ranking, with over 220 thousand euros raised from fines for violating the highway code.

The Facile.it investigation

Facile.it has also calculated the value of “per capita fine” (as the ratio between the revenues recorded in Siope and the number of resident inhabitants) although, it should be specified that not all fines are inflicted on resident motorists and, indeed, in some tourist and commuter areas contribute significantly to the overall figure. In this case the ranking changes: in first place is Rieti, with a per capita fine of 166 euros (in second place in the national ranking), followed by Rome (50 euros) and – a short distance between them – Frosinone ( 14 euros) and Latina (11 euros). Once again, the municipality of Viterbo closes the ranking, with a per capita fine of just 3 euros.

Limiting the analysis to Lazio municipalities with fewer than 3,500 residents, Sperlonga, in the province of Latina, comes in first place, which has 3,062 inhabitants and, in 2023, collected over 1.4 million euros in traffic fines. Next on the podium is Bassano in Teverina which, with 1,267 inhabitants, collected more than 840 thousand euros in fines in 2023.
