The 12th stage of the Giro d’Italia had the profile of a classic monument, and it was Julian Alaphilippe himself who took the victory on the walls of the Marche region. After almost a year without victories, the former world champion rediscovered the pedaling of his best days, raising his arms to the sky at the finish line in Fano after a 140 km long breakaway.

The start of the 12th stage of the Corsa Rosa – the 193 km Martinsicuro-Fano – was, as expected, tackled at very high speed by the group, with continuous sprints and escape attempts. Today’s route, characterized by ten walls scattered along the route, presented a profile very suitable for attacks from afar. After the first 60 km of the race covered at very high speed, a breakaway formed which numbered around forty runners. At that point the group decided to let go of the breakaway, with Bahrain Victorius limiting themselves to controlling the gap between the attackers to avoid letting Hirt and Pozzovivo return to the standings.

The race was therefore decided by the men on the run, with Alaphilippe and Mirco Maestri taking the lead with 120km still to go to the finish. The two proceeded by mutual agreement up to the last climb of Monte Giove, a one kilometer wall located -9 from the finish line with an average gradient in double figures and peaks of up to 20%. There, all the talent of Alaphilippe came to the fore, as he took off in an imperious manner, leaving Maestri in place and resisting the return of the chasing group behind him, finding the success that had been missing since last June 5th. Second place went to Narvaez, who beat Hermand in the sprint for second place.

Dangerous fall at the Giro d’Italia: out-of-control bicycle hits other cyclists at the end

A stage that did not shift the balance in terms of the general classification, with the pink jersey remaining firmly on the shoulders of Tadej Pogacar. Tomorrow, another appointment: 13th completely flat round dedicated to sprinters, the Riccione-Cento of 179 km, before the weekend with the time trial in Desenzano del Garda and the Alpine stage of over 220 km and 5400 meters of altitude with arrival in Livigno .
