A bee sting, anaphylactic shock, ten days of agony and then death. There is still strong mourning in the Correggio area of Reggio Emilia following the death of Luigi Santi, 56 year old farmer from Budrio struck down by the consequences of a bee sting suffered last April 30th, while he was working in the fields he owned. An accident in some ways not anomalous, for a person who has spent his life operating outsideincluding plants, insects and animals.
A bee sting and illness
On the afternoon of April 30th, the sting it caused anaphylactic shock, the effects of which emerged quickly. As soon as he returned to the house where he lived with his wife Morena and his mother Emilia, he had a sudden illness and fainted in front of his mother. The woman immediately called 118 and the rescuers arrived in Budrio and tried to resuscitate him, with great difficulty: cardiovascular arrest generated by the shock caused damage which was then irreparable. The doctors still managed to reactivate the vital parameters and to stabilize it. Santi was taken by helicopter to the intensive care unit of the Santa Maria Nuova hospital in Emilia, where he remained hospitalized for ten days. His conditions, already extremely serious, never improved and on Friday 10 May he died, caused by a respiratory crisis.
The last farewell to the farmer
The funeral it was held on the morning of May 11th in Budrio, in the parish church packed around his wife, mother and sister Paola. As a final tribute, front at the cemetery the friends started the engines of the farmers’ two tractors as the funeral procession passed.

A terrible fate and ruthless, with an insect bite that interrupted his earthly life, that he he always lived with ironywith the ability to play down even the most difficult situations, with his sympathy, sometimes biting, behind which, however, he hid his great generosity and humanity”, he explained.
Closeness to his wife
Santi «loved life, he was an energetic boy, almost impetuous, a little “rebellious”, like his mane of black hair. He was a really nice person, with a good head on his shoulders and, as they say, “little nonsense”. He loved his Morena, to whom today we tried to make all our affection felt to face such a painful loss and fill the enormous void that he left in her, in the community of Correggio and in her Budrio.”
