“It was only a few hours after the day of madness in the prison section of Civitavecchia that the detention facility in Via Aurelia returned to the center of the news.
According to Maurizio Somma, secretary for Lazio of the Autonomous Penitentiary Police Union, “yesterday morning several critical events occurred in the Civitavecchia prison.
When the cells were opened, a prisoner of Moroccan origin entered another cell and attacked another prisoner with his fists, then, not satisfied, he attempted to stab another prisoner with a rudimentary knife made from a gas canister. ”.
The trade unionist explains that “the policeman on duty immediately raised the alarm and the worst was avoided, thanks to the timely and professional intervention of the Penitentiary Police. While the man was being blocked, another inmate, also of Moroccan origin and from the same Section, began to threaten and rail against the staff who were working and, in the excitement, some officers and two inspectors got slightly hurt”.
“Our applause goes to the quick reflexes of the policeman and the colleagues who intervened to help him who avoided a much more serious epilogue; however, we cannot help but say we are deeply concerned about the working conditions within prisons, as well as the spread of violence that is overwhelming society and which, inevitably, has its important impact on the penitentiary world”, concludes Somma,
Donato Capece, general secretary of the SAPPE, hopes that “the Penitentiary Administration will also urgently adopt the appropriate measures to restore safety and working serenity to the Penitentiary Police personnel who serve in Civitavecchia”, without neglecting what is a historic request of the SAPPE : “equip the Corps personnel with the taser and any other useful tool to defend themselves from the violence of criminals who have no respect for the rules and for the people who represent the State”.
