Yesterday morning, at the Costa Morena port area of Brindisi, the Carabinieri of the Ecological Operational Unit of Lecce, as part of the periodic checks on waste export procedures, assisted by customs officials of the Customs and Monopolies Agency, they carried out the check of three articulated vehicles, all registered and driven by Bulgarian citizens, ready to be loaded with destination Bulgaria via Greece.
Following the inspection of the loads, it was ascertained that the waste about to be exported, instead of being made up of “plastic and rubber” as reported in the relevant transport documents, was instead made up of various polymers (polyurethane, polystyrene, PVC, etc.) mixed and mixed with various impurities such as wood, clothing, demolition aggregates and more.
The checks culminated, therefore, with the seizure of the three articulated vehicles, the approximately 70 tons of waste transported and the free reporting to the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Brindisi of the three Bulgarian citizens for the crime of illicit cross-border waste trafficking.
