Fire damage in Sicily, incoming contributions: requirements and how to request them

New extraordinary contributions for all those who suffered damage related to last summer’s fires. Below are the various subsidies.

Today, 16 May 2024, a notice was published by Irfis FinSicilia for the assignment of extraordinary contributionswith a total value of 2.9 million euros, intended for those who suffered damage due to last summer’s fires. In fact, the summer of 2023 was particularly hot in Sicily, with extreme temperatures causing numerous fires. The latter have caused a huge amount of damage throughout the island, seriously affecting the economy of several families.

Who can request extraordinary contributions

The new measure is aimed at all those who suffered damage to the real estate and movable assets following the fires that hit the provinces of Catania, Messina, Palermo and Trapani starting from 23 July 2023. Thanks to the increase in the Sicily Fund it was possible to allocate 2.9 million euros to cover the damages of 2023.

To access the contribution you will need to be owners of the assets and having reported before the date of the decree which determines the allocation (on April 9, 2024) damage caused by fires and heat waves.

The limits of contributions intended for citizens

Are expected limits on contributionsalso the maximum ceiling for the restoration of the real estate unit intended for main residence of the owner cannot exceed 50 thousand euros. If the home is different from the main one of the owner the limit is 25 thousand euros. As for the restoration of common parts of a residential buildingthe maximum limit is 15 thousand euros for each building.

Furthermore, for the reimbursement of expenses relating to the restoration or replacement of movable property damaged or destroyed within the real estate unit intended as the owner’s main residence, the maximum limit is 5 thousand euros. Furthermore, if the applicant has received or will receive insurance compensation or other forms of contribution from other public bodies for the same purposes, the limits are reduced by 50%.
