It was December 8th ten years ago when a dawn raid led to the arrest of 16 people. The story, nicknamed ‘Magic Keys’, had enormous prominence throughout Italy. The accusation was of having set up a criminal association dedicated to the cloning and illegal recharging of keys for vending machines for snacks and drinks inside the former Fiat factories in Termoli and other Italian regions. According to the indictment, the organization operated from Molise. Now, after ten years, that affair has completely dissolved. In the last few hours, the Supreme Court of Cassation annulled without postponement the sentences that had convicted the alleged leader of the gang and a former colleague of his for criminal association, first in Larino and then on appeal in Campobasso. The other charges, including theft, receiving stolen goods and computer fraud, had already been dropped in the past.
Around 150 people were investigated during the investigation. Those who had the most serious charges are now completely clean from the matter: the Supreme Court has annulled the sentences without postponement, thus excluding a new trial. “We are very satisfied because from the beginning we have always maintained that there was no criminal association,” the lawyer Michele Liguori, defender of the man accused of being the head of the organization, told Telemolise. “The judges fully accepted what has always been our thesis.”
There remains a paradox in this long judicial affair. Twelve of the people initially involved had chosen the abbreviated trial and were convicted. Those who instead opted for the ordinary rite have today achieved full absolution.
