the trial begins 11 years later

TREVISO – Jeweler drugged by his partner with gods sleeping pills dissolved in the glass. While he slept, the woman allegedly robbed her shop together with two accomplices, stealing 30 thousand euros of jewelry. It was November 3, 2013. It took a long time 11 years for the case to reach the courtroom. Contributing to putting a spoke in the wheels of the process were the postponements due to Covid in the years of the pandemic and also a accident happened to the investigating judgewho had broken his arm.

This morning, in front of the Treviso Court College, the trial finally began process to the alleged perpetrators of the robbery, which took place in a jewelery shop in San San Zeno, along the street of the same name. They are three Romanians, related to each other: CAD, 47 years old, at the time living with a jeweler; DD, 30 years old and AD, 48. They are accused of aggravated robbery in competition. A heavy charge, for which the statute of limitations is very long. The man walked out of the trial because it turns out untraceable. His position, as a result of the Cartabia reform, was struck down by the judges, who issued a ruling that he should not proceed.

THE SHOT

That evening the man, who was 69 years old at the time and is now 80, fell into a very deep sleep. It’s all the fault of the sleeping pill that his partner dissolved in his drink. The woman would have found the drugs in her house: the jeweler used them occasionally to induce sleep. But that evening his partner would have pushed him into Morpheus’ arms to get his hands on the shop safe. With the excuse of preparing him a cocktail while he relaxed on the sofa, in front of the TV, she would have added a secret ingredient to the glass, essential for the success of the criminal plan. Once she was sure she wouldn’t wake up, the woman would take over keys to the shop and the safein addition to remote control that operated the alarm system. At that point the second phase of the plan would have been triggered: the woman would have entered the gold shop together with her two relatives. At 2.05 am, the gang allegedly stole jewels, including a fine necklace, and gold articles with a total value of 30 thousand euros.

THE DISCOVERY

The jeweler had only woken up the following morning, groggy after a long sleep. Only in the following days did he realize that something wasn’t right. From a routine check inside the safe, he had noticed that some jewels were missing. A shortfall important. Yet no one had forced the armored doors. The vault was perfectly closed and he was certain that he had not moved the jewellery. As the days passed, suspicions had gathered around her partner, a former prostitute more than thirty years younger than her, with whom she had recently started a relationship. She never imagined she would be betrayed by the very woman he was attached to. Yet, according to the investigators, it was she who orchestrated the robbery together with her accomplices. The investigations, started after the jeweler had reported the shortage, allowed us to close the circle on the three alleged perpetrators. The investigators also made use of the videos of some cameras of video surveillance, thus unmasking the deception.

THE JUDICIAL PROCESS

The notice of closure of the preliminary investigations reached the suspects in February 2015. All except the 48-year-old, who was always untraceable. Yesterday morning, after a series of vicissitudes, including postponements due to Covid and an injury to the investigating judge, the trial finally arrived in the courtroom. The jeweler chose not to appear as a civil party. The next hearing has been set for June.
