Record birth rate in Puglia. The Istat data are clear. Fewer people are born, but fewer people also die. The numbers of births are 26,302, or 80 percent less than in 2021. The decrease compared to 2021 is the result of the negative values of the natural balance and the internal migratory balance, which are insufficiently contrasted by the positive values of the migratory balance with abroad and statistical adjustment. In practice there are places (many in the interior of Puglia) which are recording an enormous demographic decline, also due to the emigration of young couples.
The data shows that the population has an average age of 46 years, compared to 45.6 in 2021. Women make up 51.3% of the resident population, exceeding men by over 99 thousand units, mainly due to greater longevity. The average age is 46.0 years compared to 45.7 in 2021. Barletta-Andria-Trani and Foggia are the youngest provinces (44.5 and 45.2 years respectively), Brindisi and Lecce are the oldest (46 .7 and 47.2 years).
And then there is the emigration figure which in many respects affects the number of the population, but in any case does not raise the average birth rate.
Foreigners in Puglia come from 170 countries, mainly from Romania (20.7%), Albania (14.3%) and Morocco (7.9%). 16.7% of the population lives in the three municipalities with over 100,000 inhabitants (Bari, Taranto and Foggia) and just under a quarter (23.8%) in those with populations between 20,001 and 50,000 inhabitants.
However, the number of women remains greater than men; in fact, women in Puglia make up 51.3% of the resident population.
But if in 2021 the number of children in Puglia was 1.20 (while the national average was 1.25) today this figure drops even further. You don’t have children, on the one hand, because you arrive at motherhood late, after studying, after finding a job. In short, it’s not like it used to be. The logic of the market and also those of the family are changing. Added to this is that fewer people die.
