Bologna Airport was closed for safety reasons for a couple of hours around 4pm today, Monday. At first, it seemed that Polaria officers had found a gun in a suitcase. In reality, the Bologna Police Headquarters later clarified, the alarm would have been triggered due to a reading error caused by a new machine recently introduced in the Emilian airport, where the security area is the subject of work. The machine – whether due to a human or technical error – has yet to be clarified – created an alert by identifying the shape of a gun (which however was not there) inside a suitcase, triggering the security plan and closing the airport .
The error caused several inconveniences, with at least five arriving flights – from Brindisi, Brussels, Athens, Stockholm and Paris – being diverted to alternative destinations. At least 5 flights whose departure was scheduled between 4pm and 5.30pm were also canceled (Brindisi, Brussels, Munich, Stockholm and Amsterdam). At 5.52pm, with the landing (with an hour’s delay) of a Royal Air Maroc flight coming from Casablanca, the situation seems to return to normal.
