Luca Zaia and Matteo Salvini

«There was no consensus on the transition to the third term, which I thought was right if an administrator has done a good job. Only the League was in favor. I take note. Regarding what happens after Zaia, I have already identified a dozen possible candidates, men and women capable of maintaining the good management of this region. The League boasts excellent figures and valid administrators.” This is what was stated by the Minister of Infrastructure and secretary of the League Matteo Salviniwho spoke at 95th Alpine Gathering underway on Sunday 12th in Vicenza. The party leader revealed that he already had other options in mind for the post-Zaia post.

Potential Northern League successors

The issue is not new. In reality, the leaders of the Northern League have been wondering for some time about possible candidates for the continuation of the Venetian regional administration. Among the names circulated in the press in recent days are that of the Northern League mayor Mario Contewho leads Treviso for the second mandate and presides over Anci Veneto, and that of the regional secretary of the League Alberto Villanova. Ferro Fini is also among the figures considered for the race at Palazzo Roberto Ciambettipresident of the Regional Council of the Region for the second time, e Massimo Bitonci, undersecretary of the Ministry of Business and Made in Italy, former mayor of Padua. Then there would be the former minister from Vicenza Erika Stefaniowner of the regional autonomies in Conte I.

The allies variable

The prime minister on behalf of Brothers of Italy he seems to have indicated Luca De Carlorepresentative of Giorgia Meloni in Veneto, as a possible replacement for Luca Zaia at the helm of the Region. With regard to Forza Italia the former Northern League member Flavio Tosimayor for two terms in Verona, is a prominent figure, already a candidate against Zaia in 2015. Tosi was mentioned by none other than Antonio Tajani.

Third mandate: discussion closed, Zaia’s response

The secretary of the League now considers it over the discussion on the third term. In Treviso on Monday 13th during a rally in the hometown of the president of Veneto he said: «Only us in the League proposed and voted for the third mandate. He was rejected by everyone. What can I do, keep proposing it and vote for it yourself? The Democratic Party is against it, Brothers of Italy is against it, the Five Star Movement is against it, Forza Italia is against it. I can’t always repeat the same proposal to myself. For after Zaia I already have ten names ready.”

Zaia has not made any statements but deep irritation is evident from his entourage. Both for the choice of times, deemed prematuregiven that the mandate expires next year (with a possible postponement to 2026 for the Winter Olympics) and because the influence of the governor in the region cannot be diminished, as he won in the last elections with 77% of the votes.
