The municipal administration has decided to renovate the former Chayes nursery school in via Cambini to use it for social programs aimed at promoting the living autonomy of people with disabilities. Funding of 715 thousand euros will be used in this project, which the Municipality of Livorno obtained as part of Investment 1.2 of the PNRR “Independence paths for people with disabilities”. Of these 715 thousand euros, 300 thousand will be used for the technical part, i.e. for the redevelopment of the property, while the remaining part is allocated to the social sector for management.

The Vittorio Chayes building is a historic two-storey building with a square plan, with a rear garden, which dates back to the second half of the nineteenth century. Having become municipal property, in recent decades, until 2016, it hosted a municipal nursery school. The building was then occupied illegally, until, in 2023, the municipal administration managed to free it.

The project involves the construction of several apartments, each consisting of two double bedrooms, with a shared bathroom and a shared living area equipped with a kitchen and other common spaces open onto the garden. The dumbwaiter currently located in the stairwell will be replaced by an elevator. All systems will be redone and home automation solutions suitable to ensure the right comfort for users will be adopted, in compliance with national and regional legislation on the matter.

The premises will also be functional in the presence of operators. The people with disabilities (up to 12) who will live in the property will in fact be at the center of an independent living project which will be developed by the Integrated Social Services in collaboration with the Third Sector.

The property, due to its position in the context of the urban center and its dimensional characteristics, lends itself well to the equally important path of social inclusion within the city reality, in an innovative context. In fact, living independently does not end with the identification of a house, but must tend to facilitate the creation of a living and social context within which it is possible not only to access adequate accommodation, but also to important human relationships and the services offered by the area.
