The good news is that in the ranking drawn up annually by Center World University Rankings (Cwur), on the best universities in the world, they are present 67 among the Italian ones; the bad news is that 75% of these have lost positions compared to previous years. An example above all is that of Wisdom, which leads the Italian ranking, but has lost 8 positions compared to last year. In the same way theUniversity of Padua (which goes from 171st to 173rd place and that of Milan (from 180th to 186th).
The loss of positions
In total, 51 of our universities have lost positions, but there are 16 that have improved compared to last year. The reasons for this ‘descent’ are mainly due to the decline in research results in a context of great global competition from well-funded universities. But even in this there is still some good news. Always taking as an example Wisdomit is true that it lost positions in research, but it improved them in the quality of education, employability and quality of faculty indicators.
The comment of Center for World University Rankings on the position of Italian universities, explains this reality well: “It isit is clear that Italy’s position in education and research is increasingly under pressure following the growth of higher education systems around the world; in China alone, investments in research grew by 33%. Without further public investment in research and development, Italy risks further decreasing its performance in the future”, explains the president Nadim Mahassen.
This year in the research, 20,966 universities were ranked and those that ranked at the top made it onto the list.Global 2000,’ which includes universities and research institutions from 94 countries.
How the rating ranking is calculated
CWUR publishes the only academic ranking of global universities that evaluates the quality of education, alumni employment, quality of faculty and research performance without relying on surveys and university data submissions.
To draw it up, use seven indicators grouped in four areas which form the ranking of each University
1) Instruction: based on the academic success of a university’s alumni, measured against its size (25%)
2) Employability: based on the professional success of a university’s alumni, measured against its size (25%)
3) Faculty: measured by the number of teachers who have received important academic awards (10%) 4)
5) Search results: measured by total number of research articles (10%), appearing in top-tier journals (10%)
6) Influence: measured by the number of research articles appearing in highly influential journals (10%)
7) Quotes: measured by the number of highly cited research articles (10%)
