AVEZZANO. Over 2 million euros for the redevelopment of the Cunicoli di Claudio, between the municipalities of Avezzano and Capistrello, in compliance with the 2021-2027 Cohesion Agreement approved last 24 April during the session of the Cipess (Department for planning and coordination of Political Economics). The announcement comes from the regional councilor with responsibility for cultural heritage Roberto Santangelo, which anticipates the design of the final project, according to which the archaeological park that opens at the entrance to the engineering work will be equipped with digital tools, toilets and a space dedicated to children’s entertainment. Strategic interventions to make the area usable at 360 degrees, effectively allowing an “assisted” experience for families. An information point will be installed at the entrance, with a separate multimedia sector set up. The construction site for the adaptation of the tunnels is then awaited. The works include the expansion and improvement of the pedestrian paths of the galleries, to ensure an easy visit. Different degrees of complexity will be associated with the tunnels themselves in order to differentiate the difficulty of crossing them. Overall, 2.3 million euros will be invested, of which 2.1 will be financed under the cohesion agreement. The intervention will be completed by the implementing body, i.e. the Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape, while management is the responsibility of the regional Department of Culture, Cultural Activities Heritage Service, L’Aquila office. «As soon as the approval and publication process of the Cohesion Agreement is concluded, the Superintendency will be convened and the agreement for the start of the works will be signed. The purpose is to give the archaeological area a central role in the valorization actions of the entire territory, acting as a point of reference and coordination of tourist activities”, explained councilor Roberto Santangelo. «The Cunicoli di Claudio represent an archaeological site of great historical interest on the national and international scene which deserves to be protected to maintain the treasures of our identity, but also strengthened to improve the regional tourist offer».
