The IC-Borrello-Fiorentino and IIS Costanzo project “ColtiviAMO together a sustainable future” concluded

In the first ten days of May, as part of the Paths for Transversal Skills and Orientation, the project called: Let’s cultivate a sustainable future together: the art of valorisation”

The same event featured the students of class 3C of the IIS “L. Costanzo” – headquarters in Lamezia Terme, engaged in tutoring with the pupils of the second classes of the lower secondary school of the IC “Borrello-Fiorentino”.

The purpose of the project, expressly desired by the two school directors, Dr. Maria Francesca Amendola and Dr. Giuseppe Guida, in addition to consolidating the synergy between the educational institutions involved, was an opportunity for cultural growth for the student community, representing a practical example of the role that the professional figure of the Agrotechnician can be called upon to play.

The project, also endorsed and supported by the Teaching Board of the two Institutes, due to the high connection between theoretical and practical teaching, contributes to perfecting and consolidating the expected skills and to seeking the most appropriate technical solutions for the specific context, as well as knowing how to manage the technical tools used, taking care of safety, health protection in the workplace and the dignity of the person.

The project lasting approximately 40 hours was supervised by the PCTO general contact person Maria Orsola Chiodo and coordinated and implemented by the PCTO tutor teacher Federica Aloisio for the IIS “L.Costanzo” and by the teacher and contact person Palmina Vescio for the IC “Borrello – Florentine”.

The laboratory internship activities, distributed in two operational phases, saw, in fact, the future agrotechnicians committed to guiding, through the effective method of problem solving and peer tutoring, the “second middle school” students, with the ambitious objective to provide students with the necessary tools to be able to distinguish the different levels of biodiversity of agro-ecosystems and identify the specific connotations of the area subject to intervention, following the indications of the reference regulations regarding health and safety in places of Work.

The intervention area involved two areas: one relating to the Diaz-Montessori nursery school and the other the Borrello primary school.

The first phase saw the students engaged in the analysis of the space to be enhanced and in its design.

Subsequently, under the careful supervision and collaboration of the tutor teachers Federica Aloisio and Palmina Vescio, of the BES reference teacher Ivana Domenica Bevacqua and of the technical assistant Mr. Rosetta Co-stabile, the students carried out the rearrangement and cleaning of the terrariums, the educational garden and the already existing flowerbeds, inside the courtyard of the primary school of the Borrello complex.

The IC-Borrello-Fiorentino project concluded

The educational garden, born from the initiative of the Headmaster Giuseppe Guida, in past years has been looked after by the parents of the students and the teachers of the Institute, while following the agreement stipulated between the two School Institutes, the task was entrusted to the students of the “Professional Services for Agriculture and Rural Development” of Lamezia Terme, who took steps to enhance it, according to the skills acquired over the years.

In the second phase, six trees were planted and high-efficiency varieties donated by the two institutes involved were planted, such as: aromatic, ornamental, cacti and succulents which made the surrounding environment even more beautiful and fragrant.

The species, prepared and purchased jointly for the project by the two institutes, were selected based on the pedagogical choices designed for the students of the Borrello primary school and the Diaz-Montessori nursery school.

The IC-Borrello-Fiorentino project concluded

The young agrotechnicians have thus contributed to improving and preparing an educational space for primary school and nursery school pupils, where, in the warmer weather, they will learn to take care of their first sensorial garden, therefore :”knowledge is cultivated”!

The managers of the two educational institutions are satisfied with the initiative, for the excellent work carried out with enthusiasm and passion and thank all the people involved and in particular the municipality of Lamezia Terme for having carried out the excavations inside the courtyard which allowed the students to arrange for the planting of the six trees.

The project, in addition to pursuing the educational objectives set out above, provided the school with a well-designed learning space, to allow the full implementation of the Montessori pedagogical method, as well as providing a perfect example of socio-educational integration which saw all the students as protagonists students of the classes involved, including the most vulnerable.

The IC-Borrello-Fiorentino project concluded

The educational tutors of the parties involved hope that: the doors will always remain open to spaces of culture and beauty, to encourage the exchange of ideas and collaboration, because “knowledge is cultivated” with perseverance and dedication, in order to educate young generations to have a civic conscience for a sustainable future.
