VITERBO – Wild boars wandering around the city and inevitable accidents, a wild boar from the new litter (READ ALL) was caught in the central Via Vicenza amidst the panic of passers-by who immediately alerted the single emergency number 112. It was around eight o’clock yesterday when a matriarch with her more than ten puppies from the Arcionello park thought of going to feast towards the center of the city, stopping in the small garden adjacent to the underpass, to the fright of many passers-by, some leaving the theatre, some returning from a walk, they quickly ran away.
Suddenly the whole litter, as if going crazy, started crossing the road in a lightning-like manner in full Sunday traffic. For the poor wild boar, last in line, there was nothing to do, he was hit squarely by a car, which only then he realized what had happened. The animal died instantly to the shock of passers-by, all wondering how such insecurity and degradation is possible.
It was May 3, 2023 when the Lazio Region issued a directive from the Regional Environment Directorate which authorized wildlife containment interventions envisaged in the five-year wild boar management and control plans. The legislation provided for the capture and slaughter also and above all with a view to preventing swine fever
“Captures can be carried out in the park immediately, even while waiting for the definitive approval of the containment plan, currently being examined by the Region”. Vito Consoli, director of the regional environment sector, declared. But since May 3rd a year ago the wild boars, which should have decreased, have instead increased thanks to the new prolific births.
And if the animal management and control plan is the responsibility of the Regions, it is the Province, which manages the Arcianello nature reserve, that has to intervene, while the Municipality has the task of implementing all possible measures to avoid the presence of waste and uncontrolled growth of vegetation, a hiding place for wild animals. Among the solutions proposed, there was talk of the arrival of eight environmental inspectorsresponsible among other things for sanctioning those who feed wild boars and gravitational closures for the tubs, both of which never arrived.
It was the mayor Chiara Frontini herself who issued this note on 19 July 2022:
“The wild boar emergency is a topic on which we have been working since these first few weeks and which will have to end with urgent, very short-term and structured measures that address the problem definitively in the medium term. As for the urgent ones, next week we will issue an ordinance that provides an initial response. We are aware of the problem it represents for citizens in terms of public safety, and for many economic categories, first of all farmers who suffer enormous economic damage every year due to the massive presence of ungulates.
However, it is necessary to implement measures that include the direct involvement of the Lazio Region, which has legislative powers on the matter, and the Province of Viterbo, which is the managing body of the Arcionello park, so as to have an overall plan ready to combat the emergency in a structural way. Precisely on the Arcionello park, where during the electoral campaign we were invited by President Romoli to take part in a walk, we believe it is urgent to start an institutional table that addresses the age-old theme of the management plan within which the wildlife theme”.
Two years later, between Region, Province and Municipality, like a bounce game, no one has solved the problem (which could earn many votes) while waiting for a worse epilogue, what would have happened if it had been the person who hit the car. the leader of the pack.
