Tragedy almost touched “Campania” shopping center in Marcianise. The false ceiling of a part of the structure suddenly collapsed around 10pm on Saturday 11 May. As reported by Corriere della Sera, only the intervention of the safety teams and fire fighters prevented the people present in the catering area from being hit by the debris from the ruined attic on the floor. The staff intervened when the first signs of collapse appeared, clearing the crowd. There were no injuries.

The collapse of the false ceiling

A few minutes after the intervention of the security personnel the crash occurred, with the roar that triggered moments of fear and a stampede among those present. The collapse affected one of the busiest areas of the Campania shopping centre, the largest in the Southat the Caserta Sud exit of the A1.

The false ceiling, in fact, is located in an area of ​​the gallery with various restaurants, in front of the La Scimmitetta ice cream shop, one of the most famous commercial activities of the structure, and close to Piazza Campania, where there is the stage for the performance of the artists of the festivals and the big screen.

From the first moments of the collapse, images of the collapse began to circulate on social media, taken from the smartphones of the numerous customers who witnessed the scene. One of the first videos was also relaunched by the deputy of the Francesco Verdi-Left Alliance, Emilio Borrelli, who in a post on his Facebook page had initially spoken of the presence of injuries.

Firefighters, police and carabinieri intervened on site, as well as 118 ambulances, which however did not have to carry out any transfers to hospital.

The reopening of the Campania shopping center

A team of firefighters from the Marcianise detachment worked all night to remove debris and unsafe parts and make the area safe. The shopping center has reopened, but the places affected by the collapse remain closed, as do clubs and shops in the area.

Technicians and firefighters are working to trace the causes of the collapse. According to what the management of the Campania Center announced, the cause of the collapse of the structure in the Piazza Campania area was a tendon that came loose in a corner, causing panels to fall from the false ceiling in a few minutes.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office of Santa Maria Capua Vetere has opened a file on the episode.
