The Faenza City and Regional Councilor of the League, Andrea Liverani, expressed deep concern “about the recent criticisms raised during the conference organized by Legambiente, regarding the effectiveness of the expansion tanks in dealing with emergencies related to floods. During the conference, hydraulic engineer Andrea Nardini rejected the benefits of expansion tanks, raising questions about water resource management strategies. These criticisms are surprising in light of the fact that Legambiente, on its website, supports the importance of expansion tanks as a fundamental tool for preventing and limiting flood damage”.
“It is worrying to see that the opinions expressed during the Legambiente conference question the effectiveness of the expansion tanks. It is important to carefully examine these criticisms and ensure that decisions and policies adopted are based on scientific evidence and community interest,” said Liverani. “The implementation of expansion tanks has proven to be effective in several regions, such as in Veneto, where such infrastructures have helped safeguard citizens from flood-related disasters.”
Councilor Liverani highlighted “the problem of the lack of maintenance of the rivers over the years, underlining that this has contributed to the worsening of the situation. We cannot ignore the fact that the rivers have not been cleaned for years, and this has certainly contributed to the disaster of the recent floods. However, today we see rivers in many places super clean, why? It is important to act now to ensure that similar disasters do not occur in the future.”
Liverani concluded by saying that “there are regional studies from 2010 that confirm the usefulness of expansion tanks, but which have not been followed up with action. There must be a speedy commitment to take action on this issue.”
