Naples, the “Pink Caravan” returns between emotions and prohibitions: «The stages of beauty»

Sport and culture: the winning combination of Tour of Italy. For the third year in a row, the most important cycling race in the country chooses Naples as one of its main locations: an event that brings more than positive repercussions, in the shadow of Vesuvius, in terms of related activities and visibility. A highlight will be the sprint finish on the seafront, in the stage the day after tomorrow (the ninth of the Giro ’24). Then the open village stands out Plebiscite and the pink caravan show a Caivano. But the countdown also applies to Tuesday, when Pompeii, the other great cultural and economic attraction of the area, will be at the center of the stage. Traffic restrictions in the city will start tomorrow afternoon, with parking bans in the race areas. The same streets will be closed to traffic on Sunday.

Partenope dresses in pink. Expectations are high for the two “stages of beauty”. There are 172 cyclists for the two-day event promoted by the Metropolitan City: the ninth stage, the day after tomorrow, with arrival on the seafront. And the tenth, Tuesday 14th – after Monday’s rest – departing from Pompeii. Naples and Campania will reach an audience of 700 million potential viewers, spread across the 190 countries connected by the 5 continents. In short, the Giro showcases itself with Napoli, and Napoli showcases itself with the Giro. The stage of the 12th will start from Avezzano, Abruzzo Apennines, to get to Naples after 212 km along the Tyrrhenian Sea, Minturno, then the Domitian coast, Campi Flegrei, Lago Patria, Giugliano, the Archaeological Park of Cuma, Lake Fusarovia Panoramica in Monte di Procida, Bacoli and Pozzuoli. After the Flavian Amphitheater, cyclists will enter Naples from Coroglio. They will travel along Posillipo, via Petrarca, via Orazio, via Manzoni and then glide onto Mergellina in via Caracciolo, which will be traveled in both directions with a reversal in Piazza Vittoria. The final sprint will take place, as in the previous two editions, in the direction of Mergellina. The other stage, the Pompeii-Cusano Mutri, 142 km long, will start from the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, continue to Boscoreale, Poggiomarino, the naturalistic archaeological park of Longola from 1300 BC. The race will continue to Striano, Palma Campania, San Paolo Bel Sito and then Nola. Final in the direction of Cusano Mutri – Bocca della Selva, after having traveled through Camposano, Cicciano, Roccarainola and Cimitile with the Early Christian Basilicas.

A large-scale return of image, which will help strengthen the golden years of tourism. The mayor of the Metropolitan City also thinks so, Gaetano Manfredi: «The Giro – he said – is one of the most important sporting events in the world but, above all, it is a formidable tool for promoting the territory which has brought great success in terms of international visibility. The extraordinary tourist season that the area is experiencing is also the result of these actions that we have implemented. Therefore we wanted that, also for the 107th edition, the pink race would stop here, with a double splendid opportunity to promote our land. We succeeded in what I would define as unprecedented: bringing the Giro to Naples for the third consecutive time.” There Metropolitan City, in addition to the ordinary and extraordinary interventions on the roads under its responsibility, has committed resources for the arrangement of the race arteries. The economic endowment of the Giro is not insignificant. The numbers emerge from the study of Ifis Bank. According to the analysis that exposes the economic impact of the pink caravan, in 2023 the Giro generated a value of 2 billion. «The metropolitan area of Naples is able to play an incredible role, thanks to the enormous heritage of beauty that it can offer to tourists, visitors and enthusiasts», argues the deputy mayor of the Metropolitan City, Giuseppe Cirillo. “Moreover – adds the metropolitan councilor delegated for Sport, Sergio Colella – the numbers of recent years are truly impressive”.

Already in ’23 the race had worldwide TV coverage of 23,285 hours of TV broadcasts for an audience of 694 million people. 704 international and unaccredited newspapers. 10.4 million spectators on the street, of which 1.3 were under 14s. The numbers of the Giro digital website and app, which recorded live coverage of 38 million (+14% compared to 2022). The Naples 2023 stage ranked 3rd in terms of value in TV visibility in the world, with a 20% share on Raidue, 9 million pages viewed (compared to 5.6 million in 2022) and 13.6 million social impressions. One of the best results for non-mountain stages. «A historic event for our city – the words of the mayor of PompeiiCarmine Lo Sapio, metropolitan councilor for Tourism – we are already bringing together all the souls, from the Municipality to the archaeological park and the ecclesiastical institution which is very strong in our country, to make the most of this opportunity”.
