“Bosco Sant’Antonio” retirement home, a dramatic situation for the elderly and workers

We ask the Mascaro administration to make it clear what it intends to do for the “Bosco S. Antonio” retirement home, for the guests and for the operators who have lost their jobs

Press release

Since the end of April, the municipal retirement home “Bosco S. Antonio”, after representing for decades a symbol and a point of reference for the reception of many elderly people in the city and the area, has stopped its service.

An epilogue that is certainly not unexpected, with respect to which the Mascaro administration has essentially remained firm, limiting itself in recent months to two union ordinances which have only made it possible to stem the problem without however intervening in a structural manner in recent years and without outlining a perspective on the topic of welcoming the lonely elderly people of our city.

The municipal administration should have intervened in time to adapt the structure to the new regional legislation on social welfare structures for accreditation, but nothing has happened. Not to mention the fact that since Mascaro has been in office, for 9 years nothing has been done to avoid the sad epilogue of the last few days. Today, those who pay the consequences of the Mascaro administration’s inaction are the few remaining elderly people and their families, the home workers who have worked with love and dedication despite many difficulties, our entire territory which loses an important garrison for what is the most vulnerable and precious part of our society.

And, precisely because of the inertia of the Mascaro administration, even if it is possible to adapt the structure to the new regional legislation, a new tender will have to be published to identify the new managing entity and it will not be possible to provide the social clause to safeguard the operators who served until a few days ago.

And it has nothing to do with the fact that they are employees or collaborators of a company: when so many jobs are lost in our area it is a defeat for everyone!!!

The damage that the lack of a councilor is clearly causing, given Mascaro’s precise choice not to appoint anyone after Teresa Bambara’s resignation so as not to explode the contradictions of a shattered majority, is causing on the social policy front and throughout the city. Practices like this should be followed by an institutional figure who can deal with them 24 hours a day, not left at the mercy of events or with stopgap solutions that solve nothing.

To date, the objective fact is that the city has lost control of social policies for the elderly and the administration has no vision of the present and future. Are works planned to adapt the retirement home? Are new services planned to meet a constantly increasing elderly population, aggravated by a social context that causes many situations of loneliness and fragility? These are the answers that the Mascaro administration should give.

We ask the Mascaro administration to make it clear what it intends to do for the “Bosco S. Antonio” retirement home, for the guests, for the many who have applied to be welcomed, for the operators who have lost their jobs.

And we ask the Mascaro administration for continued commitment and a far-sighted vision to ensure that older people enjoy the dignity and respect they deserve, thus helping to build a more just and inclusive society for all.

Rosario Piccioni, municipal councilor “Lamezia Bene Comune”
