REGGIO CALABRIA – “Calabria is the poorest region in Italy. All the indices are worsening according to Istat which presents a picture of real social alarm, also because the worsening in Calabria occurs while the data of the other Italian regions is improving. In Calabria, 20.7% of the population is in a state of poverty, a figure that has dropped compared to that recorded during the previous year when it was equal to 12%”. This was stated by the group leader of the Pd in the Regional Council Mimmo Bevacqua explaining how the new social alarm cannot be underestimated.

“In essence – he continues – those who in 2022 were in a condition of strong risk of poverty or social exclusion, i.e. 42% of residents, have fallen towards the most disadvantaged group. Faced with this dramatic picture, one understands that the revolution that Occhiuto announced with great fanfare just a few days ago, describing a region miraculous by his government, evidently did not refer to Calabria.”. “We need to be fully aware of the dramatic situation we are experiencing – claims the Dem exponent – to be able to begin to adopt adequate countermeasures, especially when the national government is preparing to approve the differentiated autonomy which would definitively bring our Region to its knees.

All the healthy forces of Calabria, political, social, trade unions and associations must unite and network to face the alarm and develop a new vision of the future that can create development opportunities. A fundamental step is to begin to actually measure ourselves with the reality which, as we have been saying for months, is not what the regional council’s social media portray. Immediate interventions are needed to support welfare and minimum services, starting with health services which continue to languish and will be canceled by the autonomy of Calderoli and the League”. “We have presented for some time – concludes Bevacqua – a bill to strengthen public healthcare, but the regional government evidently has other intentions.

We can no longer waste time, nor continue in instrumental struggles with an electoral flavor which are heavily influencing the life of the Calabrian institutions, as demonstrated by the last session of the Regional Council. Instead, we need an immediate response from the best forces still present in the Region to build a different future and give concrete answers to the many Calabrians who struggle daily to be able to use minimum services and exercise fundamental rights”.
