The Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security responded to the act of signification of Legambiente ee Libera, signed by the presidents Stefano Ciafani and Luigi Ciotti, regarding the Pellini affair. According to the Ministry’s response letter, with the recent declaration of ineffectiveness of the confiscation of the assets of the Pellini defendants by the Supreme Court in March 2024, the District Attorney’s Office of the State of Naples has decided to initiate a civil compensation action.
The Lawyer’s Office requested Ispra’s technical support to assess the state of the damaged sites and quantify the costs necessary to repair the environmental damage. The Ministry of the Environment invited Ispra to provide this technical support to initiate the civil compensation action.
Legambiente and Libera, satisfied with the Ministry’s response, hope that all judicial procedures will be activated to immediately block the assets of over 200 million euros of the Pellini brothers, definitively condemned for an environmental disaster. They underline the importance of the State acting promptly to guarantee environmental remediation and rehabilitation interventions.
The presidents of the two associations highlight the urgency of transforming the “polluter pays” principle, expressed by the citizens and associations of Acerra, into concrete reality. They consider it unacceptable that confiscated goods can be returned to those who obtained them illegally without guaranteeing the remediation and rehabilitation interventions necessary to restore the environment.
