After the Brenner pass, the collection of signatures to abolish the customs code is pressing

The collection of signatures continues at all the Coldiretti Asti zonal offices to have a significant and forceful impact on the abolition of the customs code, or rather, to say: no more food imported from abroad and disguised as Italian.

The objective is to collect 1 million signatures at a national level, with the Asti area responsible for doing their part, to abolish the concept of “final processing” as a prerequisite for considering foods produced abroad as Italian. The initiative is also aimed at obtaining: transparent labelling, also on the origin of food and the increase of controls in ports and borders.

The threat of fakes in Italy is real, concrete and growing. Therefore, it is necessary to intervene promptly and urgently to protect the true Italian product, the income of farmers and, equally, to guarantee the importation of products that respect the same food, environmental and worker safety rules, also in terms of rights.

“Coldiretti is not against imports” specifies the President of Coldiretti Asti Monica Monticone, “but demands the principle of reciprocity, that is, respect for the same rules that are rigorously observed in Italy. Otherwise, not only would it be unfair competition, but both the marketing and consumption of agri-food products that are not sufficiently safe for human health and the planet would be authorized.”

“After the mobilization of Brenner, in which we participated with a substantial representation from Asti, the commitment continues in the name of the active and concrete responsibility that every farmer and every citizen can guarantee to support the cause” adds the Director of Coldiretti Asti Giovanni Rosso. “The collection of signatures, in fact, is aimed at defining a proposed European law of popular initiative, to guarantee the transparency of what we bring to our tables. Countering the fake made in Italy also means valorising, with greater incisiveness, our agriculture which, instead, is identity, quality, distinctive and innovative. Thanks to Coldiretti’s policies and actions, Italy is at the forefront of food labelling, therefore an example for the whole of Europe”.

The campaign can be supported by signing, as long as you are adults and have an identity card or passport, in all the Campagna Amica farmers’ markets and in the Coldiretti area offices. The awareness campaign is also promoted on social media with the hashtag
