Pint of Science returns to L’Aquila from 13 to 15 May, pubs all over the world will serve pints of science – Radio L’Aquila 1

L’AQUILA – The most sparkling event with scientific dissemination returns to 76 pubs and 24 Italian cities on the evenings of 13, 14 and 15 May. From the six cities of the first edition in 2015 to the 24 cities of the 2024 edition: the rhythm is that of an event that is increasingly loved for its informal way of making science a shared knowledge.

The numbers of the international event, with 26 nations involved, in all 5 continents, around 400 cities present and over 2000 speakers are record-breaking, making it in fact the largest global event of scientific dissemination.

Talking about science over a mug of beer in a restaurant in the historic center? A bet that has proven successful in L’Aquila since the first participation in the international event in 2017. And for this edition, researchers from the main scientific institutions of the area will be in two pubs, at Cloè coffee (Corso Federico II, 47) and al Garibaldi Enoteca&Cucina (V. Garibaldi, 36). Entrance is free and the event is dedicated to all those curious and “thirsty” for science.

The topics covered will concern the most current issues in the panorama of scientific research and will be presented not only in one informal place but also in a completely informal way allowing the general public to participate, intervene and become passionate about science more easily and why not?! even to toast it.

During each of the three evenings, each pub involved will host interactive presentations of around 40 minutes followed by questions from the public, in an atmosphere made conversational and relaxed also thanks to the beers poured during the conversation. In L’Aquila, of the six themes of the Festival, four will be present: Atoms to Galaxies (chemistry, physics and astronomy), Planet Earth (earth sciences, evolution and zoology), Our Society (law, history and political science, social sciences) e Tech Me Out (technology).

Scrolling through the list of topics covered, all nine are unmissable talk scheduled for release 2024 Of Pint of Science L’Aquila and, as always, the real problem will be the choice.

Monday 13 May at 7.00 pmto open the exhibition, there will be Davide Di Battista And Tullio De Rubeis from the University of L’Aquila, who will talk to us about energy communities, renewable sources and individual behaviors to reduce energy consumption. At the same time, in the other room, Paolo Gorla of the Gran Sasso National Laboratories (LNGS INFN) will explain to us what made the existence of the universe possible, telling us about the brilliant intuitions of the great Italian physicist Ettore Majorana.

Tuesday 14th May, a busy day with four appointments – at 7.00 pm and 8.15 pm – in the two pubs. At Garibaldi we will face with Fabiano Compagnucci of the Gran Sasso Science Institute the question of internal and peripheral areas: are they a resource or a place from which to escape? Next, botany Daniela Tinti he will talk to us about alien, rare or endemic species by presenting the album of botanical parodies “Extinction and other great (in)successes”. At Caffè Cloè, we will talk about dark matter at 7.00 pm Giulia Pagliaroli (LNGS INFN) and at 8.15pm we will discover which are the new super telescopes in the world, the technological giants that observe the Universe, with Benedetta Di Francesco And Ivan DiAntonio of INAF – Astronomical Observatory of Abruzzo (Inaf OAAb).

Also from the Abruzzo Astronomical Observatory, Mauro Dolci he will talk to us Wednesday 15th at 7.00 pm of the cutting-edge astronomy that has always been carried out in our region, from the foundation of the Specola of Collurania to the activities in the observation station of Campo Imperatore. On the same evening, at Garibaldi, Mauro Maccarrone (Univaq) will show us at 7.00 pm the molecular basis of wine and our related emotions and reactions; followed by the meeting with Giulio Breglia (GSSI) on the analysis of how communities and institutions react in the face of disasters – be they climate, earthquakes, floods or pandemics – and on the possibility of a zero-risk society.

Pint of Science is enriched every year, more and more, with highly topical scientific topics – comments Alessia Tricomi, national manager and President of the Pint Of Science Italia Cultural Association. – “And this year climate, environment and technology are the leitmotif of this 2024 edition which promises to be even more stimulating than the previous ones, with an increase in the number of talks and also the pubs in which we will be present”.

The topics covered will concern the most current issues in the panorama of scientific research and will be presented not only in one informal place but also in a completely informal way allowing the general public to participate, intervene and become passionate about science more easily. “From the protection of protected species, to energy consumption, through the depopulation of the Apennines and the reaction of communities to catastrophic events. This year in L’Aquila, alongside the mysteries of the cosmos and the discovery of the Universe, we focused on themes of great relevance and social impact. – he claims Chiara Badia, local coordinator of Pint of Science – The parterre of speakers is always of a high level with researchers and scientists from the GSSI Gran Sasso Science Institute, the INAF Astronomical Observatory of Abruzzo, the Gran Sasso National Laboratories of the INFN and the University of L’Aquila, institutions that offer technical support to the L’Aquila edition of Pint of Science”.

The beating heart of the association are also the young volunteers who are part of the local teams who, with great passion for science and for the pleasure of meeting together, organize this event. “We have involved researchers and scientists, students and doctoral students, who work in the main scientific institutions of the area precisely to highlight and enhance research and scientific knowledge as a local potential for social, cultural and economic development and growth”, concludes Chiara Badia.

Pint of Science is a completely free and non-profit event, which exists thanks to the contribution of sponsors. This year too, special thanks go toINFN.

(National Institute of Nuclear Physics), which has accompanied Pint of Science Italia since its first edition with sponsorship throughout the territory. And also atINAF (National Institute of Astrophysics), sponsor of the Atoms to Galaxies theme, together with the new arrivals NBFCs-National Center for Biodiversity and OGS-National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics, sponsor of the Planet Earth theme, and of the Extended Partnership for Quantum Sciences and Technologies, NQSTI-National Quantum Science and Technology Institute, sponsor of the Tech Me Out theme. Furthermore, each city avails itself of the support of numerous local entities that give support and support to the event and without which Pint of Science would not exist. Last but certainly not least, the pubs hosting the event.
