Cuneo – Sunday 12 May marks the traditional solemnity of Blessed Angelo Carletti, co-patron saint of the city. Everyone knows San Michele, the official “patron”, who is celebrated on September 29, but few know who this “Blessed” or “Compatron” is. Angelo Carletti, also known as Angelo da Chivasso, was born in the Turin town in 1410. he died in Cuneo on 11 April 1495. He was an Italian Franciscan, man of letters and humanist, venerated as “blessed” by the Catholic Church and is officially remembered on 11 April.

After obtaining his doctorate in moral theology at the University of Bologna, Angelo Carletti dedicated himself to political activity as senator of Monferrato. However, shortly after his thirties he entered the Franciscan order inspired by their activities aimed at the poor. In his fields of interest, particularly moral theology, he published several texts, in which he set out his own doctrine: he was among the supporters of the foundation of pawnshops in favor of the poor. Pope Sixtus IV appointed him papal commissioner for some delicate missions aimed at consolidating the Christian faith, which is why he accepted the task of preaching in favor of the crusade against the Turks who occupied Otranto. He died in Cuneo in the convent of Sant’Antonio, on 11 April 1495, aged around 84.

According to tradition, Blessed Angelo Carletti offered protection to the population of Cuneo against the siege of the French by deflecting the cannon fire directed against the city. Villa Oldofredi Tadini preserves the habit that belonged to the religious man in the eighteenth-century chapel.

In the painting that depicts him, he holds the sword of Justice with the symbols of the Carletti family in his right hand; with his left hand he raises the Summa Angelica, the book that made him famous in the field of culture. In the background, on the left, the Church of the Madonna degli Angeli, where his incorrupt body rests; on the right, the Palazzo Santa Chiara of Chivasso, the current seat of the Town Hall.

Next Sunday 12 May at 4.30 pm a Holy Mass will be celebrated in his honor at the Sanctuary of the Madonna degli Angeli. The Eucharistic celebration will be presided over by Don Giovanni Falco. An official representation of the Civic Administration will intervene with a banner.
