PALERMO SAMPOLO, A FREIGHT PORT THAT NO LONGER EXISTS

In a video the images of the old Sampolo freight yard, now incorporated into the construction site of the railway ring

The old freight yard Palermo Sampolobuilt in the 1950s to serve the Port, has remained virtually unused in recent decades, due to the changing needs of port traffic, now essentially made up of RO-RO, i.e. the ferrying of road vehicles.

Today the vast area of the railway station, created by digging an enormous trench, hosts a large part of the railway ring, between the Imperatore Federico and Giachery stops. The Fiera station, which includes two tracks to be able to make crossings between two trains in the opposite direction, falls entirely within its vast square; the remaining part is home to the construction site for the closure of the railway ring.

In the reportage of our imperishable Ninni you can see how we are preparing to equip the line from the stop Giachery (near the airport) to the future station Politeama of the railway ring, whose works are nearing completion. In the images, the stack of sleepers and the ballast that will be installed for the future track. Also visible is the excavated earth treatment plant serving the Giachery-Politeama construction site.

Good vision on ours Youtube channel “IN PROGRESS”.
