Dengue, Civic Palace: “Spezia was the first in Liguria to implement a preventive mosquito control system”

“The municipal administration of La Spezia is involved in the front line in the prevention of Dengue. Already in recent weeks, the Municipality of La Spezia has taken action, through the Environment Directorate, to prepare the first anti-larval treatments in the various neighborhoods of the city. At the same time, the entire port area is also taking steps to implement anti-larval interventions at scheduled intervals, in order to intervene in synergy with the rest of the City”. The Municipality of La Spezia informs about this in a note. “At the same time, the University of Genoa has planned to carry out monitoring and capture of mosquitoes (subsequently analyzed by the laboratories of the Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute) on a fortnightly basis, starting from the first week of May until the end of October , in order to intercept any imported cases of arbovirus, including Dengue”, the note continues.

The communication from Palazzo Civico continues: “For the second year, the City of La Spezia has implemented a systematic anti-larval treatment in all the manholes and canals of the city, anticipating those of this year in order to give even more effectiveness to the treatments carried out . In fact, if these treatments are carried out in spring they can significantly reduce the proliferation of mosquitoes in summer. Furthermore, the Peracchini administration, through the participation of councilor Giulio Guerri in the regional intersectoral table for the fight against arbovirus, contributed to the work that produced, in recent months, the proposal for the first Regional Arbovirus Plan, which came into force on last April 30th and which will be renewed from year to year. The focal points concern not only the treatments to be carried out in the event of arbovirosis developing, but also forms of prevention and in some cases antilarval interventions. It is a source of pride for the municipal administration that the City of La Spezia was (and still is) the first in Liguria to implement a preventive system to combat mosquitoes, effectively anticipating regional directives and bringing to Liguria an innovative technology that combines the use of organic products, thus also preserving the ‘good’ species, which increase biodiversity, as well as insectivorous birds and bats, large devourers of mosquitoes. Through the availability of a portal that allows the georeferencing of all manholes and treated areas, the Municipality can guarantee timely control of what has been carried out”.

“The administration in collaboration with the responsible ASL5 services – underlines the councilor for health policies Giulio Guerri – is also starting an information and awareness campaign towards citizens, in order to ensure also on this front, a concrete and useful contribution to prevention in the health field”. He then explains the note from the Municipality: “As first indications for keeping tiger mosquitoes away from our homes, we recommend the use of mosquito nets which are the best tool. If you use repellents it is preferable to choose those with natural essences, especially if there are children or elderly people in the house, avoiding the use of chemical platelets especially in bedrooms. Not only that, a good habit is to dress in light, because dark colors attract the tiger mosquito more, which originally lives in dark bamboo forests. Stagnation of water must be absolutely avoided, such as that of saucers, where it is still advisable to put normal sand, so as to maintain the water, but avoiding creating a puddle where insects reproduce”.
