G7 Justice, ministerial meeting begins in Venice

The G7 Justice kicks off today at 2.30pm in Venice.

Justice Minister Carlo Nordio welcomes to the lagoon his colleagues from the United States, Merrick Garland, France, Eric Dupond-Moretti, Germany, Marco Buschmann, United Kingdom, Alex Chalk, Canada, Arif Virani, and Japan, Hiroaki Kadoyama. Also joining the ministerial meeting are Vera Jurova, vice president of the European Commission, and Ghada Waly, executive director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime – UNODC. Ukrainian Minister Denys Maluiska and Prosecutor General Andriy Kostin will be present at the session dedicated to their country.

Among the main dossiers on the table of the third G7 Justice, after those of Berlin and Tokyo, the situation in Ukraine, between activities already underway and new perspectives, for the consolidation of democratic institutions and to avoid any risk of illegal management of funds intended for post-reconstruction -warlike; the fight against international corruption; the fight against international trafficking of synthetic drugs, such as fentanyl, the spread of which represents a growing global emergency. Another focus will be dedicated to human trafficking, with a view to implementing the Palermo Convention. We will discuss the fight against all forms of organized crime, but also the challenges of artificial intelligence and the defense of the rule of law.

The Keeper of the Seals, after the welcome ceremony in the courtyard of the Scuola Grande San Giovanni Evangelista, starts the work of the ministerial meeting at 3 pm. The first two sessions are scheduled today: ‘Our commitment to Ukraine’ and ‘Cooperation on the challenges of global justice and creation of the Venice justice group’.
