On Saturday 11 May 2024, at 10.30 am in the square of the Prefecture of Caserta, an anti-racist demonstration promoted by the Ex Canapificio social centre, the Migrant and Refugee Movement of Caserta and other local entities will take place.

This event will have as its main objective to address the issues of reception, inclusion and special protection, which have been strongly influenced by the recent legislative changes introduced by law 50/2023.

The organizations involved in this project are associations that have been active for many years in the province of Caserta and believe that the new laws have had a very negative impact on the already precarious lives of immigrants present in our territory. The Government has dismantled the SPRAR reception system and weakened the residence permit for special protection, while the Immigration and Asylum Pact voted in Europe in April has created new irregularities and trampled on the rights of foreigners living in our country.

The territory of Caserta presents particular characteristics with regards to the migratory phenomenon, and despite the difficulties, it has given the opportunity to one of our fellow citizens and activist, Mamadou Kouassi Pli Adama, to express his talent. His story inspired the film “Io Capitano” by Matteo Garrone, which won numerous awards, including seven David di Donatello, a Silver Lion and a nomination for the 2024 Oscars.

After many adventures, Mamadou manages to arrive in Italy and settles in Caserta, where, thanks to the welcoming community represented by Caritas, the Ex Canapificio Social Center, the Fernandes Center and local institutions, he manages to obtain a residence permit for humanitarian reasons and all the social and educational tools that allowed him to represent his story like that of many other “captains”.

If Mamadou had arrived today, what would have happened to the “Captain”? Without a place to carry out his activities, without special protection and without the SPRAR (now SAI) reception project, what would have been his fate?

For this Saturday, many of us will be in front of the Prefecture to discuss the problems related to immigration, inclusion and reception in the province of Caserta. We will ask the Municipality and the Region to commit to starting the renovation works as soon as possible on the “Mamadou Sy” Social House, located in the Ex Onmi, and to reactivate the SAI of Caserta, which is a reception model that symbolizes the Italy in Europe.

The demonstration will be a moment of peaceful and professional mobilization, in which we will carry forward our requests with determination and respect. The objective is to promote a constructive dialogue and obtain a concrete commitment from the institutions to improve the living conditions of immigrants and guarantee adequate and inclusive reception.

The appointment is for Saturday 11 May at 10.30 in the square of the Prefecture of Caserta. We hope that our voice will be heard and that steps can be taken towards a more just and supportive society.
