Messina prison, inmate in a rage tries to set fire to the cell. Three policemen end up in the emergency room of the Polyclinic

Moments of great tension were experienced in the late morning yesterday by the officers of the Penitentiary Police of the Messina prison, when a prisoner of Tunisian origins, in expressing his dissent towards the rules established within the structure, armed with scissors, he threw himself at an officer on duty, repeatedly trying to hit him in the face. Colleagues intervened immediately but were also hit. Three of them were rushed to the emergency room of the Polyclinic.

“Once again – denounce the General Secretary of the FP CGIL Francesco Fucile and the provincial coordinator Giovanni Spanò – we find ourselves reporting an extremely serious episode which has put the safety of the officers operating inside the prison at risk, who were also called to intervene to foil the subsequent attempt by the same inmate to set a fire in the inside his own cell. We cannot fail to highlight how the repetition of episodes of this kind only makes the work of these workers particularly complex, towards whom we express our utmost solidarity. We therefore once again urge the Management of the Messina prison to subject the actions of the police officers to evaluation by the Department’s Rewards Commission, and to implement concrete actions to protect the officers themselves, who are now more than ever forced to work in conditions increasingly complex.”
