A police inspector from the Nesima police station managed to stop a young man from Catania from his suicidal intentions. Thanks to the inspector’s negotiation and persuasion skills, the man returned home to his family members whom he had already greeted with a farewell note.
It all started when, in recent days, the young man’s father and sister-in-law showed up at the police station, in tears and visibly agitated, reporting that the man had recently left home, leaving a farewell note for his family. children from whom his intentions were clearly understood. The man had also sent a similar message to his wife’s mobile phone, with which he was in the process of separating.
Sensing the danger of the situation, the police asked the family members for as much information as possible in order to track down the man, learning that he had left home in his own car, taking only his smartphone with him. Shortly afterwards, during yet another attempt by the father to contact his son by telephone, the young man answered his cell phone, sobbing and confirming his intention to end it all, effectively saying goodbye to his relatives.
The phone call
At this juncture, the inspector entered the conversation and managed to keep the man on the phone, establishing an increasingly confidential relationship with him. After having acquired the full trust of his interlocutor, in a phone call that lasted about 40 minutes, during which the young man explained the reasons that had led him to think of an extreme gesture, mainly linked to the end of his marriage, the policeman he managed to get him to tell him where he was at the time, asking to meet him.
The man, hesitant, agreed to meet only the inspector, threatening that, if he saw other police patrols, he would not hesitate to disappear again.
The meeting
Therefore the policeman, alone and in plain clothes, went to the agreed appointment and, after listening to the man’s outburst for over an hour and making him understand that it had only been a moment of fragility, he managed to convince him to follow him to the police station where, in tears, he hugged his loved ones again, still shaken by what had happened.
In the following days, the man’s family, with a letter addressed to the police headquarters, wanted to express their heartfelt thanks for the work of the State Police and the policemen of the “Nesima” police station, whose prompt intervention and mediation and persuasion allowed a tragedy not to occur.
