FLORENCE – The jury of the Gregor von Rezzori Prize – City of Florence, chaired by Beatrice Monti della Corte and composed of Colm Tóibín, Andrea Bajani, Alberto Manguel, Maylis de Kerangal and Edmund White has announced the shortlist for the foreign fiction section. They include: Michael Cunningham with Day (La Nave di Teseo, trans. by Carlo Prosperi), Álvaro Enrigue with The Dream (Feltrinelli, trans. by Pino Cacucci), Han Kang with L’ora di Greco (Adelphi, trans. by Lia Iovenitti), Claire Keegan with Un’estate (Einaudi, trans. by Monica Pareschi) and Laurent Mauvignier with The Birthday Party (Feltrinelli, trans. by Yasmina Mélaouah).
The prize for the best translation into Italian was awarded to Daniele Ventre for Homer’s Odyssey (Ponte alle Grazie) by the jury composed of Beatrice Monti della Corte, Andrea Landolfi and Paola Del Zoppo. The actor Fausto Russo Alesi will read some songs at the Cinema La Compagnia in Florence.
On that occasion, the winner of the Award for the best work of foreign fiction will also be announced.
This year too the Award will take place partly online and partly in person.
The Festival will open on May 29th at 6.00 pm with the Lectio Magistralis by Hisham Matar, writer of Libyan origins with English nationality, winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 2017, at the Cenacolo of the monumental complex of Santa Croce. The awards ceremony for the first edition of the Gregor von Rezzori Prize for Young Poets, conceived and promoted by the Santa Maddalena Foundation thanks to the precious contribution of the Regional Council of Tuscany which it will be presented at the stand of the Tuscany Region on the occasion of the Turin International Book Fair. At 5.30 pm the Festival will then dedicate a memory to Michela Murgia and her relationship with the Korean language at Cinema La Compagnia with a conversation between the jurors of the Award for the best translation into Italian and the writer’s translator Hee Sun Moon.
The videos of the interviews with the finalists will be visible from 31 May on the YouTube channel of the Santa Maddalena Foundation and in a Rai Cultura special.
The Award, conceived and organized by the Santa Maddalena Foundation chaired by Beatrice Monti della Corte, is promoted by the MiC Center for Books and Reading, sponsored by the Tuscany Region and supported by the Regional Council of Tuscany, Municipality of Florence, by the CR Firenze Foundation and Credito Cooperativo del Valdarno Fiorentino, with Unicoop Firenze as technical sponsor.
