The favored hypothesis was that of murder-suicide, but the autopsies on the bodies of the two Palermo spouses Laura Lupo and Pietro Delia cast doubt on this reconstruction, opening up other possible scenarios which investigators continue to investigate. The two were found dead in their home in via Notarbartolo, Palermo, on the morning of Saturday 4 May. She, a municipal police officer, was in the kitchen lying in a pool of blood and still had the service pistol in her hand with which she allegedly fired at her husband.
As it turned out, the couple had recently gotten back together after a period of separation. The house showed no signs of forced entry and the location of the apartment along a street that was always very busy made it difficult to imagine that someone could have broken in and killed the couple without anyone noticing anything.
All circumstances that had pushed investigators to favor the murder-suicide hypothesis. However, the autopsies carried out on the two bodies suggest a dynamic that could cast doubt on this version. Laura Lupo in fact had two wounds, both caused by the service pistol: one in the neck and one in the head. After having fired four times at her husband, it is difficult, according to the investigators, to believe that the policewoman could have shot herself the first time and then, already seriously injured, pulled the trigger again to kill herself. The case is not considered closed and investigators continue to investigate the couple’s private life.
